No really I do. As strange as it sounds re-coding has really allowed me to dive deep into my qualitative data and really 'hear' what the data is saying.
I'll give the good folks who make Nvivo a thumbs up as the software is very easy to use and once you are familiar with it then you can really blast ahead in quick time. I just need to work on getting my department to get a longer term license as I'm sure that it will be invaluable in the future as well.
Currently I'm starting to make tentative claims and this is a very important phase as I want to make sure I'm standing on sound and logical ground before I start the actual write up process. Re-work is the most despised task unless someone is paying you to do it!!!

Hi Roger - when you say re-coding do you mean working in the nodes to tease out the finer details or do you mean going through your sources for a second round of coding?
ReplyDeleteI write the help for NVivo and I'm always trying to get my head around how researchers approach their work!
Hi
ReplyDeleteIn this case it was going through the sources a 2nd, then 3rd time. The reason why it was so easy was being able to highlight different coded nodes meant I could fly through to the places I was most interested in and then use the drag an drop to put them into a new coding structure. I showed a PhD colleague over in NZ from Denmark how it worked and saved her a bunch of time.
Maybe it is because most of us try and learn for ourselves first so if you could write a really good first time users manual you could be on to a winner. I used the youtube tutorials and they were okay(ish).
Cheers........Roger
